Of Montreal, Skeletal Lamping

22 10 2008

Of Montreal released their ninth full length album, Skeletal Lamping, on October 7.  The album is made of a myriad of short pieces, strung together into 15 songs.  Listening to Skeletal Lamping in one sitting is like riding a weird, pop rollercoaster through the minds of a load of mental patients.  And, I don’t mean that in a bad way.  The lyrics give you a crystal clear view into the mind and musings of lead singer, Kevin Barnes.  It’s loving yet lewdly sexual, it’s horrific and sleazy yet beautiful and poetic, and it brings you hope and fear all at once.  In short, it’s amazing.  This might be the most forthright and honest group of songs that I have ever heard and while the lyrics often border on dragging you into the depths of a black hole, the weird, often poppy music brings you floating back up to the ground.  I love it and I can’t stop listening to it.

Of Montreal will be playing at The Riviera here in Chicago on October 27th.  Check them out, you won’t be disappointed.
