N.A.S.A. and why these guys are huge or will be after 2/17.

3 02 2009

North America South America are two guys,  Squeak E. Clean (sam spiegel, spike jonze’s bro) and DJ Zegon, who are really good at getting people to say yes. So how good? Good enough to get, David Byrne, Tom Waits, M.I.A., Kanye West, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Scarface, the Wu-Tang Clan, Chuck D, Lykke Li, Santogold and George Clinton all to collaborate on their upcoming release, The Spirit of Apollo. That is just the short list.

They met back in 2003 and it has taken six years for the completed album to become a reality. Maybe because they had real people, doing real vocals. No autotune on this baby. Apollo is due out 2/17.

They will be at Coachella and are going all out. “We have Martian booty-dancer girls, crazy cyclops aliens, people in astronaut suits,” Spiegel says. I have a feeling these guys will be as much a visual act as and aural one.

I have heard a few leaked tracks and these guys are fun; not mind blowing, but what you need to get a party started. Kind of a new type of mix tape perhaps….Very hip hip-hop.

NASA will be in Chicago at Abbey Pub March 7th.

Music festival rumblings…..Coachella kicks off 2009

31 01 2009

mainposterthis time of year is so exciting for me as an avid purveyor of live music. once the coachella lineup announcement comes out and the lollapalooza pre-sale ticket rumor mills start churning, you know spring is only a few months away.

coachella is lolla’s older brother that lives in the california desert. he has an affinity for cool hip bands from the 80s and 90s. think new order et al. coachella wins my heart over musically because of the large electronica offering. lolla wins the reality contest, because it is here. chicago makes for a magnificent background , although the sun setting over the mountains made my 2005 coldplay-headlining-cochella  experience, one of perfection.

the coachella fest is now a three day event and in lieu of the economy, they are offering tickets on layaway this year. it will be interesting to see how the 3 day lolla pass hits the wallet.

drumroll please…

the 3 major headliners are: paul mccartney (scratching my head), the cure and the killers. ummmm? other “big” acts: the yeah, yeah, yeahs, franz ferdinand, amy winehouse (no, no, no) morrisey, my bloody valentine and thievery corp. all in all, kind of a strange big name lineup. it seems tailored to the 40 year olds. i don’t think the killers should headline a night, even though they were great at lolla 4 years ago. the beattle? i have heard more about his divorce in the past few years. the cure is cool and typical of past headliners.

the beauty of these festivals is in the “small” print bands: tvon the radio, fleet foxes, lykki lie, white lies, friendly fires (we heart them here at eb) and the ting tings, along with dozens more that will be fun for some.

needless to say i am not looking into air fares to cali this year. i am hopeful that all of the small print bands will be at lolla in august.

My favorite albums of 2008

21 12 2008

I have never done year end accolades, but I have never had a music blog before.  These days purchasing an album in it’s entirety seems almost archaic. I feel there are two types of albums now…those that are concept albums and kind of need to be listened to in whole and those gems that have a bunch of really good singles. For this list, I have considered good EP’s too, because it seems a more expedited way, with more rapid turnover to feed our A.D.D. (at least mine) need for new music.  In no particular order….

Viva La Vida/Prospekts March EP - Coldplay  So Coldplay and Brian Eno nuff said. The late year add on EP showed a different side of Coldplay. BTW, they have rescinded there retirement threat.

Turning Down Water For AirTurning Down Water For Air  -  James Yuill  Folktronica fans rejoice. This guy is great. Blips and bleeps and scratches can be warm and fuzzy. One of my favorite new artists in a long time.

Youth NovelsYouth Novels- Lykke Li     Thank you 90210. Lykke is vulnerable, yet demands your attention.

EmergenceEmergence- Trifonic   Organic electronica with guitar riffs and everyday sounds, from proteges of BT.

Random Album TitleRandom Album Title – Deadmau5  This Canadian musician has changed the landscape of dance music. Really!!!

Down To EarthDown to Earth- Jem  Jem invokes gospel, rap and folktronica in spite of poor record label relations. Thankfully they didn’t ruin it for everybody.

Eyes Wide OpenEyes Wide Open – Olivia Broadfield  Just love her. Accessibly. Female best new artist of the year for me. This years “TV made me” winner.

Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart [Explicit]Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart – Rachel Yamagata   Usually a little toasted on stage she is raw and powerful and makes Chicago proud.

Robyn [Explicit]Robyn – Robyn  Sugary pop that took 3 years to make it to our shores. Can you handle her?

Elevate [Explicit]Elevate- Morgan Page  Tasty originals and remixes including personal favorite Jenny Owen Youngs.

Last Night – Moby  Returning to his roots…no glow sticks necessary.

Strobelite SeductionStrobelite Seduction – Kaskade  His Chicago connection won him resident of the year at Smart Bar. Accessible and always evolving…enter collaboration with Deadmau5

Hello...x We Sing, We Dance. We Steal Things – Jason Mraz   Hello – Tristan Prettyman  Cute, fun, poignant and Left Coast love.

Feed the Animals [Explicit]Feed The Animals – Girltalk  This is my internal monologue after just one cup of coffee. How anyone cannot have fun listening to this is beyond me.

90210 and unexpected gifts; Lykke Li.

25 10 2008

Lykke Li

My sophomore year in college was my first hit of 90210. The original show had the Peach Pit and David Silver as resident DJ. The acts on the original show were the early predecessors of myspace band fodder, reaching out for new ways to be heard.  I have not seen the new show, nor how Brenda’s bangs and Kelly have evolved, but frequently check out the latest playlists from the show to fuel my addiction of music. Today, I was trying to palette the new Kings Of Leon album, I respect it but I couldn’t take more than one bite. To help with the aftertaste I looked at the “new” 90210 playlists and found a refreshing musical elixir….Lykke Li. I tend to have a sweet tooth and realize that my musical tastes are similar. Lykke is like a swig from box of nerds, chased by pixie stick. Maybe that is why they call it pop. I didn’t get that crash though. Her album, Youth Novels, was produced by Bjorn (of Peter, Bjorn and Jon,  of “young folks” fame).  She has a voice that is familiar and to use a quote from another review is both “youthful and novel.” She has baby doll vocals with an ecclectronica background. I went and pressed the “buy album” button on itunes, a signal of commitment in this day of singles. Check her out and let me know when Dylan comes back to Beverly Hills to pay a visit to son. Discuss: Couple Lykke with a free Dr. Pepper from the new GNR album and I wonder if Mikey would bite?
