New News and New Songs From Tegan and Sara

28 09 2009

According to their website, Tegan and Sara’s newest album, Sainthood, is set to go on pre-sale today (album release 10/27).  With the album pre-sale, fans can also purchase three books chronicling the lives of the Indie rock darlings over a good portion of their tour in support of The Con and while they worked on Sainthood.  The books, titled On, In, and At, will also feature writing from openers such as Dallas Green, Northern State and An Horse, and photographs from Lindsey Byrnes and Ryan Russell.

The band premiered six songs from Sainthood last week at the Rifflandia Festival.  It sounds like Sainthood is set to be their best album yet!

An Horse @ Schuba’s 9.14.09

15 09 2009

anhorse

I’m going to start this off with a warning to you dear readers – be ready to read some gush. I don’t know what to say about last night’s An Horse show at Schuba’s that I haven’t said before about past shows. Every time I see An Horse play live, it’s exactly the same. They manage to get a HUGE sound out of two people, a guitar and a drum set. They’re tight, they exude energy, and it’s always just an awesome live show. Last night was no exception. So, rather than repeat myself or repeat other bloggers who are no doubt saying the same things about An Horse’s shows, I’m just going to say this: if you only take one piece of advice all year, take this – go see An Horse perform live. You will not regret it. It’s impossible to watch/hear them play and not want to jump around with the music. And when the song, Little Lungs, is performed, it quite literally moves me, every single time. In fact, the first time I heard that song was a live version – the album wasn’t out yet – and as soon as it ended, my best friend and I looked at each other wide eyed, and she just said, “Whoa,” and I could only nod. Every time I experience Little Lungs being performed live, I feel completely encompassed by the music and can’t think or speak for a few moments afterward; and you can tell there’s that general feeling among everyone in the room. It’s an incredible experience that I want you all to enjoy, so check out An Horse when they hit a city near you!

Okay, I’m done gushing. I promise there will be nothing but snark from here on out for the rest of the week!

An Horse – Rearrange Beds

17 03 2009

cd

Rearrange Beds, the first full length album from Australian duo, An Horse is out today on Mom and Pop records. Of course I’ve had it since October because I get special deals for being a music blogger. So eat it. Just kidding. I don’t get deals. I bought it from the merch table when they were last in town and then stood near the back and quietly watched them kick Chicago’s rock and roll ass while I freaked out and fell in love all in my head. Since that time last fall, Rearrange Beds has been on nonstop rotation in my ears. It is some seriously good music. Go buy it now. I promise you’ll love it, there’s not one bad song on the album.

I also just saw An Horse again the other night here in Chicago, and will have a review up soon so check back! And, yes, I stood to the side and privately freaked out in my own head during that entire show as well.

An Horse, The Abbey Pub, 10.28.08

30 10 2008

This last Tuesday, I had the pleasure of seeing Australia’s An Horse perform at The Abbey Pub in Chicago.  Americans got their first equine experience when An Horse toured with Tegan and Sara last spring on their EP, Not Really Scared.  Since then, they have signed with new boutique label, Mom & Pop, and last week released their debut full length album, Rearrange Beds.  Currently they are touring across the country with Ohio Indie rocker, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and are converting American show-goers to horse lovers one show at a time.

Kate Cooper and Damon Cox rocked The Abbey Pub, to put it simply.  The unassuming pair bring an almost surprising energy to the stage when they play and their hilarious banter between songs helped to create a fun, comfortable environment.  Cooper is tiny in stature, but as soon as she hits the first note, her presence engulfs the stage.  I love their new album (will be reviewing it soon) and I love, love, love the lyrics that Kate Cooper writes.  By the end of the show, I was harboring a secret desire to sit down one on one with Cooper and hear her thoughts on everything in the world.  Instead, I went home and went to bed.

The only complaint that I had was that An Horse’s set was just too short.  I would’ve liked for them to play all night long, but when you only have 10 songs to your name, I guess that limits your show length.  They are touring with Mayfield through the end of November.  Definitely check them out if they hit a city near you (schedule below).
