With the return of Lilith Fair looming on the horizon, Leah and I have put together our wish list of bands that we’d like to see on the tour.  Leah requested that I let you all know that her original wish list was about 6 times as long as it is now, but I sat on her and gave her noogies until she agreed to shorten it.  I just can’t edit that much.  I don’t have the attention span.  Since we’re huge lesbians, we’ve done this in softball terms for you.  Now let’s get out there and have a clean game!

First to bat, Leah’s Lilith Fair Starting Lineup:

Indigo Girls – Duh. No explanation necessary.

Imogen Heap – Have you ever seen her in concert? She’s amazing. She literally sound-engineers herself while on-stage, creating, looping, mixing and combining distinct sounds to weave together her songs. It’s really incredible to watch.

Missy Higgins – Cute lesbian who plays guitar and piano while simultaneously telling breakup stories in an Australian accent? Yes, please.

Bonnie Raitt – Legendary songwriter and singer who can still belt it out with more soul than just about anyone. She manages to look better with age, a phenomenon I like to call Diane Lane Syndrome.

Edie Carey – Such a beautiful voice and every time I’ve seen her perform, her between-song banter has had the audience in stitches. Voted Most Likely to be Famous in my one-person Most Likely To Be Famous Poll 2008.

Rose Cousins – Incredible songwriting and soulful lyrics. She’s big in Canada. It isn’t just a t-shirt, it’s the real thing.

Garvey’s Lilith Fair Starting Lineup:

Tegan and Sara – Duh.  They are two of the hottest musicians out there right now so I don’t see why Lilith Fair wouldn’t do everything in their power to get T&S on the bill.  Not to mention that they’re also Lilith Fair alum.  And I’d like to have a litter of finger babies with either of them.

Gossip - Beth Ditto is THE diva of the Indie/Punk scene.  She owns the stage, has an amazing voice, and she and her music are totally inspirational for us gay gals and boys.  As a side note, I’ll probably start a Beth Ditto religion sometime soon.  The Church of Dittology.  I wonder if Tom Cruise will join… we will be gay friendly, after all.

Brandi Carlile – Brandi’s music is already in the vein of Lilith Fair type music.  She’s friends with, and often tours with the Indigo Girls.  She’s a big mo.  Her latest album is one of the best of 2009… need I go on?

Bat For Lashes – Bat For Lashes appeals to my most emotional, moody, stereotypically girly side.  So… since this is an all chick extravaganza, BFL clearly belongs.

Daphne Willis – Daphne is my newest local fave and also my main pick for taking over the world in 2010.

*Leah already put Edie Carey and Rose Cousins in the starting lineup.  I’d like to put them on stage together.  They’ve played together quite a bit and, while they’re both amazing solo artists, I like their chemistry onstage and their voices sound beautiful together.

Leah’s Bench Warming List:

Fergie – Went from Isn’t That The Girl From The Black-Eyed Peas? to Doesn’t She Have A Few Songs And Isn’t She Married To Josh Duhamel? No voice, and a product of the Music Marketing Machine.

Jessica – Again, Music Marketing Machine. Can she play an instrument?

Miley – I should just shorten Music Marketing Machine to M3. So, M3 and her whole existence is designed to 1) build the Hannah Montana brand and 2) fulfill her father’s dreams of success despite a lackluster mullet-topped career.

Ashlee – See Jessica.

**Garvey agrees with Leah’s list of pine riders and would like to add Katy Perry for having the most annoying song ever written about something I love to do (kiss girls).  Garvey would also like to point out that Leah clearly just hates mullets.

Hi kids!  Day two of exciting news for you!  Drum roll, please… I would like you all to meet our new contributor, Leah Neaderthal!  Leah is an avid music fan, one of my funniest friends, and founder of this other super awesome web site.  I’m sure that you’re all going to love her even more than you love Oprah.  As an introduction, I forced Leah through a short interview so that you, our lovely readers, can get to know her.  Please enjoy. – Garvey

Garvey: Leah, who’s getting the most play in your iTunes right now?

Leah: Santigold, definitely. I’m kind of mesmerized by her songs. They’re just… cool. She would kick my ass in a cool contest. I also like that she went to Wesleyan. She’s wicked smahht and she don’t front.

Garvey: What do you love most about music?

Leah: This question reminds of the movie “Almost Famous,” where the lead character asks the DJ the same question, and the DJ replies, “In a word, everything.” And then it reminds me of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays the DJ. I like him. Did you see “Doubt”?

Garvey: No, I thought it looked boring. Have you ever seen Happiness? That movie is fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked.

Garvey: As an avid bicycler (side note – is that the right term?), do you listen to tunes when riding and if so what do you listen to?  If not – whose music is good for spinning, since I know you’ve taught some of those fabo classes.

Leah: Bicycler, cyclist, biker… they all work. I don’t listen to music when I ride – I don’t think it’s safe. I know a bunch of other cyclists would disagree with me, but personally I’m against it. When I spin, though, it’s a must (Have you ever tried to do a spinning workout without music? You can die of boredom). I like electronic music like BT, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers and Crystal Method. Sometimes I sprinkle in Today’s Hottest Hits.

Garvey: Do you think that the fact that you have fun, bouncy curls gives you a leg up in the dancing department over straight-haired people such as myself?

Leah: Yes. Next question.

Garvey: Do you care to put that answer to the test in a dance off with me?

Leah: Yes, although I elect H. Reed to be my pinch-dancer.

Garvey: You’re not allowed to have a pinch-dancer and you will lose!

Garvey: Why does Miley Cyrus suck so much and are you surprised that the world has not yet had a Britney/Kim Zolciak crotch shot from Miley?

Leah: Oh, so many reasons. Her dad, whose claim to fame is a mullet and one terrible song, completely bought her fame with the help of the Disney Channel so they could grow the Hannah Montana brand and merchandise it even further (sorry, I’m a marketing geek). Is she even a real person?

Garvey: Maybe she would seem like more of a real person if she did give a Britney crotch shot.

Leah: Ha. Ew.

Garvey: How do you feel about the opportunity to contribute to Earbudz?

Leah: I feel warm and tingly all over. I also feel a hand on my leg. Wait a second. Garvey! Get your effing hand off me!

I love Pat Monahan and I love Train, and their new album is great! I’ve had “Hey, Soul Sister” on repeat since I first heard it 2 weeks ago, and when I bought the new album yesterday and realized they had a song about my favorite beach town on earth, Half Moon Bay, they stole my heart again!

Aside from the first track on this new album, “Breakfast in Bed” (which is a little dreary for my taste), Train and Pat Monahan have maintained their unique, playful sound- plus, their frequent references to their hometown (I heart SF) always make me happy. And if you’ve ever seen Train in concert you can picture Monahan dancing around on stage with his feminine hand gestures, and enjoy the album all the more because of this visual. You’ve gotta love a straight man from San Francisco who loves what he’s doing and doesn’t care what he looks like in front of millions on stage. I do!

Train will be at The Vic in Chicago on Nov. 2 at 7:30 pm. If you haven’t seen them before, or if you have, make sure you check them out!

Hi kids, just some quick news for you this morning and then we’ll have a super fun announcement later this afternoon!

First up – Lilith Fair is back in 2010! Yayyyy lesbians! Okay fine, it’s not technically a lesbian event, but if you’ve ever been to a Lilith Fair show, well… it is.

Documents detailing two separate Beatles arrests in the 1960’s – George Harrison’s possession charge from McCartney’s wedding and John Lennon’s possession charge from a raid on his London Flat – go up for auction today. Ready, Beatles fans… aaaaaaaaand bid!

People are all a’flutter over Adam Lambert’s “campy”, over the top album art for his album, For Your Entertainment. I… don’t… get it. I mean, it’s Adam Lambert. And the album is titled, For Your Entertainment. What’s the problem here?

Canadian folk singer, Taylor Mitchell, was attacked and killed on Tuesday by two coyotes in Cape Breton Highlands Park, Nova Scotia. Earbudz sends our deepest sympathies to Mitchell’s family, friends and fans.

According to the Huffington Post, “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” took in $2.2 million domestically from its first screenings Tuesday night. Is it just that there aren’t that many good movies out right now, or people actually care? Spend your money on Zombieland, people! It’s funny and Emma Stone is HOT!

Video games are so cool these days. Remember old school Nintendo? When people thought they were fancy because they not only had controllers, but they had the guns, too?! Now look at all of the crazy shit that kids have to play with. Controllers that put your real life movements into the games, dance mats that record your steps, microphones, guitars, drum sets… it’s amazing. And the latest offering for gamers is right in line with making gaming even more fun. Ladies and gentlemen, drum roll please (hit your red and blue drum circles repeatedly)… enter DJ HERO! That’s right, tomorrow the makers of the ever popular Guitar Hero, will launch their newest game for those who secretly want to be musical stars – DJ Hero. DJ Hero features an authentic looking turntable controller where you can mix and scratch 102 different songs to your liking. The games boasts songs from the likes of N.E.R.D., Beastie Boys, 50 Cent, Marvin Gaye (wtf? slow jam remix I guess?), the Black Eyed Peas, and more. I see hours of drunk mixing with my friends in the near future.

I really love Lady GaGa. Not only is she an amazing entertainer, but she just seems like a really cool chick. She’s different, but comfortable in her own skin and I love that. She recently performed at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner and she did a rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine that gave me chills. She changed up some of the wording to make it more appropriate for today’s political climate and the event for which she was performing. It’s really, REALLY good.
